How our practice questions are made

Where the questions come from

Our questions are original. They are written from publicly available lifeguarding and first-aid knowledge — the material covered by the American Heart Association's Guidelines for CPR and Emergency Cardiovascular Care (AHA/ECC) and public lifesaving references — and organized around the topics a US lifeguard certification course tests.

We never copy, paraphrase, or reproduce any training provider's copyrighted manual. The underlying facts of CPR, first aid, and rescue technique are public knowledge; every question and explanation here is written from scratch.

The review gate

Questions are drafted with AI assistance, then screened by an automated medical-accuracy review that flags anything doubtful. Safety-critical content — CPR ratios, AED use, choking care, spinal injury care — gets extra scrutiny, and flagged disputes are settled against the primary guideline documents.

Nothing is published automatically. A human reviews every question and its explanation, and only questions explicitly marked approved are ever served. Every question live on this site today has passed that review.

Which guidelines we follow

Questions on the US edition of this site follow current AHA/ECC guidance. The Australian and New Zealand editions follow ANZCOR guidance instead — resuscitation protocols genuinely differ between countries (compression ratios, choking care, and assessment sequences all vary), which is why every practice question carries a badge naming the guideline body it follows. A question should only be judged against the guidelines of its own edition.
